Mar 27, 2008 - No problem man, I know people have a warped view of Indian cinema and its a shame.Satyajit ray was too good to be associated with Bollywood and there are so many other indian film makers that are more than bollywood too

Mar 31, 2008 - I found your comment about the mother punishing her daughter interesting. You may be right, but I'll respectfully offer a differing view. I think the mother truly feels "sharam" or in English -- shame -- and that is where her anger comes from. It may be the same reason she kicked out the older aunt... for begging and having no pride. I am writing this comment because you show so much wonderful passion for film. Your interpretation has given me a reason to watch this film again. thanks!

Mar 31, 2008 - no i think ur right 100%, it's such an emotionally complex scene I just put it into a minimalist perspective as possible for the video really (didnt have too much time to go into too much detail)the vids not really an analysis, it just to go on about why I like it so much. That scene is a very touching, yet so simple/subtle at the same time (which only a selected few filmmakers can pull off). but thanks for the comment :)

Apr 22, 2008 - There are so many amazing bollywood films but the trick lies in the selection, you should have a really good reference to guide you through the films you are seeking to watch besides the boring musicals << not all of them of course. I am glad Ray made different genera of films he believed in; he is one of my favorite directors and pather panchali truly had huge impact and influence on me and I was taken aback by the style of his film-making.

Apr 22, 2008 - I remember loving the opening sequence in which Durga after stealing the fruit and hiding from her mother, goes running to her aunt (which wasn't there) hide the fruit underneath the banana as a surprise gift, fills the bowl with milk and serve it to the hidden cats. What I liked about the film is the characters behavior, it's quite astonishing how real, realistic and relatable the characters are and the way they react or think to certain scenes .............

Apr 22, 2008 - therefore audience reacts immediately and get familiar with the content regardless of the language, different customs etc. No wonder the film won the Cannes Price for best human document. I agree with you, the film gets better and better after several viewing and I am glad it holds a place in your top 10. You can catch the documentary and interview of Satyajit commenting on The Apu Trilogy through viewing my channel.

Apr 26, 2008 - Hi. It is wonderful to see this among your top ten. It is certainly among my favourites. About the old aunt, played by Chunnibala Devi, did you know Satyajit Ray had to seek her out of a Calcutta brothel? She also used to take regular shots of opium during filming. God bless her.

Apr 27, 2008 - wow i didnt actually know that, cheers for that info

Apr 28, 2008 - there is another funny story about her taking directions. after the shot was over for the scene of her character's death, she kept lying still because nobody had told her that she could move again. and for a while people on the set got scared that she had actually died.
