Visiting Star, Stockton Helbing (see him at http://www.stocktonhelbing.com or on My Space at http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=20474649 Mr. Helbing appears Courtesy of Armored Records (http://www.armoredrecords.com )) accompanies Paul Anka Award winner, singer/songwriter Candice Brown, and the Cal Poly Jazz Band (directed by Dr Dave Kopplin) in Hoagy Carmichael/Ned Washington's romantic ballad (arr. Clayton), "The Nearness of You" (1938). This unabashedly simple and infectious love song has remained popular for over 70 years (most recently performed and made popular again by Superstars Norah Jones and Diana Krall). Stockton Helbing is the last and most recent drummer and music producer for the late Maynard Ferguson. The album "The One and Only" (2006) was the last studio album of this Jazz Legend and has earned Mr. Helbing vast Industry acclaim. In addition to his extraordinary Music Performance skills, Stockton is emerging as a force in Music Production, producing and performing in and with many Grammy-winning artists and albums. In their first show since their UNC Greeley Jazz Festival performance, the Band again exudes the style and technique that makes them popular. The challenges of a delicate and fragile ballad played by a Big Band are many. Dr. Kopplin navigates his Star, Candice Brown, through the treacherous waters with help of Stockton Helbing, James Goese (alto), Brandon Cordoba (piano), Darrell Tung (tenor), Megan Harris (trumpet), the Capn, Craig Tsurumoto (bass), and, of course, the Cal Poly Jazz Band. A "Cameo" by special guest tenor saxophonist Tom Luer, http://www.tomluer.com ,doesn't hurt either.
