Apr 12, 2008 - what is good to some is bad to others. what is bad to some is good to others.
sagaforest Says:
Apr 12, 2008 - some say that most men have a conscience that compels them to do good and that they do not need holy scriptures to tell them what is good and what is not. but what is good? who decides? societies decide what is legal, who decides what is good? random thoughts, i know.
TheEndGameBoY Says:
Apr 12, 2008 - JazakALLAH khair brother.
VennomFangX Says:
Apr 13, 2008 - A religion is a system of behavior. And there's nothing inherently wrong with that. I just think that many religious beliefs are false hopes. But I'm not going to answer your question "Why do good and refrain from evil?" I can answer "Why do _I_ try to do good and refrain from evil?" For the same reason I eat bread and not poo: Killing, stealing, lying etc. are distasteful to me to the point of inducing a physical reaction. Why is that, you ask? Does it really matter?
muhajidin Says:
Apr 13, 2008 - Killing, stealing, lying etc. are distasteful to me to..
MushroomNinja420 Says:
Apr 13, 2008 - Oh please good deeds come second in Islam after belief. That person doing the charity could be a pagan and the drug-lord an Afghani Muslim and you'd be required to defend, respect, and consider that drug-lord a brother over the pagan.
MushroomNinja420 Says:
Apr 13, 2008 - If you think the promise of going to some eternal opium den in the sky is the only good enough reason for good deeds as opposed to wanting to make a better place for your children and family or seeking the love and admiration of your peers, than man I feel bad for you.
Loreleila Says:
Apr 13, 2008 - Fairness and justice are not what they might seem. Look for the bigger picture, beyond the superficial or apparent. How you die has little to do with such things. What is in your heart? The drug baron may have taken what he wanted in a physical sense, but he was alone, he had no empathy and no compassion so his life was sad and he was lost, whatever he may have thought. In his life he was already dead. The man who cared was with all, always, and never alone, nor did he die alone.
SSanf Says:
Apr 13, 2008 - What ever made you think that life would be fair? That is absurd. People do generous things because they feel good about doing them. That is their reward.
brainouty Says:
Apr 13, 2008 - Since "allah" of Qu'ran never gets paid for sins and Qu'ran never says Allah MAKES justice, it's kinda disingenuous for you to use the Qu'ran here. So I separated that irrelevancy from the question of Justice being required for "good" to be worthwhile. The question is good, but what you used to make it, undermined what you attempted to do. For Islam behaves like Scenario #2, and according to the ahaditha, so did Muhammed. So next time separate Qu'ran from your question.
ScottishAtheist Says:
Apr 13, 2008 - Well first of all, life isn't fair we all know that. So a good man can die horribly while a man that does bad deeds can live like a king, that's life, and we should strive to prevent that.Societies would quickly collapse if anyone robbed murdered and stole, it's in the individuals best interest to keep peace. The majority are good, but there's a few cheats who take but don't give. I wouldn't want to be hurt, and I don't want to harm.Being good isn't religious or non religions.
physcolamb Says:
Apr 14, 2008 - Hmmm this is good , you look a lil confused though ... hehe just kdin. Jazzak allah khair bro.
TuplaP Says:
Apr 14, 2008 - The idea that you need to have a reward at the end or no good deed is worth anything is the problem! Morality should come from us not from a force outside of us. If one man does good to be rewarded in heaven and another one does good not to punished in hell and third man does it because he himself thinks it is the right thing to do, then who god (if we would say for now that he exist) should reward? Ofcourse the man who did it ´cause it was right.
TuplaP Says:
Apr 14, 2008 - And I would argue that a goodman who dies in young age has still lived thru kind of bliss and happiness that the druglord will never understand, not ´cause god has shined a light on that good man but ´cause doing good is in our nature and those who don´t practise that nature will not find that kind of happyness
OoReachingJannahoO Says:
Apr 14, 2008 - very good question
opinionhead444 Says:
Apr 15, 2008 - I don't know, sir.It really depends on the person.I am an agnostic and I don't go around and demean the rights of any person willingly in 99% of occurences. When I have done it, I have been remorseful. I really believe that death is the great moral equalizer. Good or bad, each person has a life span that will inevitably end. Be said person a rotten kingpin or a humble servant, the existence of death really makes their deeds and the consequences of them moot in terms of nature.
opinionhead444 Says:
Apr 15, 2008 - Where the deeds matter are with those that give them weight like you have done with your scenario. My ignorance before seeing your video guided me on this topic. After I saw the video, I gave those deeds my own weight. In any event, the point of good is most likely an inherent motivations for many people like vice is most others. If you want to do good, you will do it regardless of the philosophical implications that led up to it or come after it.That is how I have it figured, I guess.
naejimba Says:
Apr 21, 2008 - Nope, not fair at all. Life isn't fair. My purpose for doing good is the same as yours, except for one thing: I don't think there is an eternal reward or punishment for doing so. It's funny, I have thought for a while on why I do good things, and even thought at first it seemed like a silly question to hear, I can't come up with a sufficient explanation. It's just what comes natural.. short of someone who is a true sociopath, empathy is common to all of humanity. I don't need a reason to do good
thomastravis Says:
Apr 23, 2008 - The purpose of doing good in my opinion is because if you don't it's anarchy. Which just causes more death. BUT without a god who says what is good and what is bad? And another thing about good is it shouldn't be dictated by a "god". There's situations where you may have to do something that is horrible just to help someone else out. Or a bunch of people. For example...if you see someone running into a building going to kill people..do you kill him? It's wrong...but he's going to kill others.
murdy650 Says:
Apr 25, 2008 - Thankfully the majority of people regardless of there Religion want to do good( I would say 80% ) however If you are born a Muslim and your head is filled with hate For every other religion form birth and your only goal inLife is to convert the world to the way of the muslim even If it involves killing them and felling good about it and gettingYour reward in paradise. You know you are evil bastards Who want to take over the world and have us all praying toAllah with our ass in the air.

May 1, 2008 - A point of view of life from another 'American' who finds his culture and beliefs from another part of the world. You live and enjoy life in a country created by the things you dislike. You are a fool
ramdsil Says:
May 17, 2008 - As an atheist I find peace in doing good. That is the most simplistic answer I can give you. I dont want to be doing good, just to gather bonus points in heaven. That is selfishness and beats the very purpose of doing good. I do good and want nothing in return, not even justice if i die a miserable death. I die knowing that I have died in my pursuit of peace. Peace!
ramdsil Says:
May 17, 2008 - I would also like to add this. Doing good shouldnt be pre defined by any institution or person. I believe everyone good or bad really can know for himself what is good and what is bad. If religious instituitions are given the power to decide on our behalf coz they think humans are "stupid", then they will stretch the definition of being good to what suits itself. For ex. Converting someone else is doing good or donatin mony to the church or mosque is also doing good. C the pattern? Get the point?
mlamry01 Says:
Apr 12, 2008 - JazakAllah bro, great video.
