Pamphlet I received in the mail, courtesy of Brian Jean, MP."Sadly, distortion and inaccurate information is used in many anti-seal hunt campaigns. Radical activists wave around misleading information and wait for people to open their chequebooks in response. The east coast seal hunt is regulated, closely monitored, and humane. It is a vital part of fisheries management, and an important part of the income of many working families. You won't hear these facts from the lips of radical special interest groups, but that does not change the facts. Prime Minister Harper and the Conservative Government are standing with Newfoundlanders and Labradorians. This is about more than protecting a Newfoundland tradition. It is about fighting lies, propaganda and distortion. It is about defending the livelihoods of working people. It is about protecting our natural heritage. Most importantly, it is about standing up for what is right." Please contact the following members of the EU in support of the seal hunt:stavros.dimas@ec.europa.euniels.busk@europarl.europa.euole.christensen@europarl.europa.eu dan.jorgensen@europarl.europa.eu christel.schaldemos@europarl.europa.eulebech@post5.tele.dk margrete.auken@europarl.europa.euThank you!

Nov 19, 2008 - Most of the support for the ban is based in desperation. The vegetarians and vegans desperately accept all claims of cruelty, without second thought, to save baby seals. Some also use these creatures to atone for their previous consumption of meat and to distance themselves from the guilt they're trying to impose on others. canucktunes Says:

Nov 19, 2008 - (cont) Vitamin B12 deficiencies are linked to feelings of guilt and depression according to numerous studies and this vitamin is primarily found in meat, eggs and dairy products.Fortified products have been made available but studies have found that many of these products do not offer enough of this vitamin and that some of it is not efficiently absorbed causing deficiencies. This is why physicians advise against these vegetarian diets for children and teens, especially vegan diets.

Ersabette Says:

Nov 19, 2008 - Excellent and very valid points Canuck! A friend of mine back in high school tried vegetarianism after watching a video claiming meat consumption is the reason so many girls are reaching puberty at such early ages. She lost an obscene amount of weight in such a short time. I think she lasted a year before she was eating meat again. Now she's on another diet where she eats seafood, hasn't mentioned anything about beef though.

Nov 19, 2008 - Estrogen like chemicals and chemicals that our bodies convert into estrogen like compounds can be found everywhere, especially in non organic foods. But we still don't know how much of it is safe or unsafe so we shouldn't make drastic changes in our diets. That can result in more harm than good. I reduced my red meat intake to keep my cholesterol in check and it worked fine. I haven't had a cholesterol problem for years and I still enjoy steak and sirloin burgers every week. Variety's the key

canucktunes Says:

Nov 19, 2008 - I also completely forgot to mention the dangers of vegan diets with people with mental disorders. The medical community has been advising people who are are in a depression state not to go vegan, even when it's seasonal. B12 deficiencies are also known to accentuate the anti-social behaviors of people suffering from bipolar disorders and paranoid schizophrenia. I've seen some of this behavior on Youtube : The inability to focus or reason, & the need to dismiss, condemn and vilify people.

stinkyfeet Says:

Nov 19, 2008 - You are a voice of reason in a world that lacks reality. The problem with the whole ban is that people don't realize seals are not even close to extincted and the only reason people follow these accusations about the seal hunt is because seals are mistakened to be 'cute and cuddly'.

Ersabette Says:

Nov 19, 2008 - Stinkyfeet - Thank you for your comment and support!

RoderickStrong Says:

Nov 19, 2008 - I'm all for animal rights, but not this. I don support people protesting dolphin slaughters (since they are an endangered species), I even don't have a problem with people protesting mink farms, but seals are not an endangered species, and their meat is also used.

RoderickStrong Says:

Nov 19, 2008 - Yes, there are a few hunters that abuse the system, but that's only a small handful. I do admit that the clubbing does look bad in the eys of people outside of the Atlantic provinces and Quebec, but the only reason why groups such as PETA, and the IFAW protest seals, is because they can't go into beef, pork and chicken slaughterhouses. If they saw the way chickens, and turkeys are killed they would be protesting them more than the seals, so they use the seals as their damn scapegoat.

Ersabette Says:

Nov 19, 2008 - Roderick - I agree with you. It is those hunters that abuse the system that should face the appropriate consequences, not the hunt as a whole. And that goes for every hunt in the world, not only the seal hunt. Thank you for your comments!

failte82 Says:

Nov 19, 2008 - Oh well, it's not true that only Harper and the Conservatives stand up to special interest groups and celebrities. Liberal senator Celine Hervieux-Payette told Bardot off and wrote to Sarkozy about that matter. Otherwise I don't follow of the debate, but the Liberals have been governing for 11 years and the hunt is still going on. So this pamphlet doesnt tell the truth.

Ersabette Says:

Nov 19, 2008 - Simply because of one word the whole pamphlet doesn't tell the truth? If so, you jump to conclusions.

failte82 Says:

Nov 19, 2008 - I believe you misinterpret what I'm saying. What the pamphlet says is alright, but I do have a problem with the torries representing themselves as the only party who stands up about the matter. They present themselves as the only party possible for those directly or indirectly concerned with this industry. I'm not against the seal hunt, i'm neither pro-liberal nor pro-conservative, I only dislike the way they phrased it.

failte82 Says:

Nov 19, 2008 - I should have said doesnt tell the truth about political options for our Atlantic friends or about the way all our politicians deal with the matter. Sorry about the confusion.

Ersabette Says:

Nov 19, 2008 - My apologies, I understand now. Thank you for taking the time to explain.

RoderickStrong Says:

Nov 19, 2008 - I can's support Harper, he re-nagged on his promise on the Accord

Hoshack1978 Says:
