In "Signore ascolta" Liu pleads with her master Calaf to decline Turandot's challenge to answer three riddles. "Tu che di gel" is Liu's final outburst as she tells the icy Turandot that she will learn to love one day. But Liu, in saving the Prince she loves, knows she must die before morning. She grabs a dagger from one of the guards and stabs herself. The following funeral music marks the end of the opera as written by Puccini and he died soon afterwards. It was customary to pause at the point, "where "the maestro laid down his pen"These arias are from a iive performance with Welsh National Opera. The conductor kept strictly to Puccini's markings so, in the first phrase of "Signore ascolta" the "ascolta" and "Ah" are separated. The ending is carefully shaped to allow a long high B flat which crescendos and then ends before the orchestra plays the answering, closing phrase.Apologies for the slightly muffled sound, but this was a 'shopping bag' recording made by a keen member of the audience.
